I Fucking Love Fall

Today at work a colleague of mine who also happens to be a fashion blogger said, “You’ve looked so cute all week, do you just love to dress for the summer to fall transition?” Let’s be clear that I don’t know shit about fashion and I have no idea what the wears for a “summer to fall transition” look like. My sister often calls my ensembles weird and sometimes I purposely try not to match just for the fuck of it.

The truth is that I have probably looked so good all week because I am joyful. You see, cooler weather has settled over Denver and my spirit feels invigorated, my heart feels relaxed and I have stopped sweating profusely. The pressure for toned arms, shaved body parts and extra antiperspirant has faded like the green on a summer leaf after the first cold snap. The early morning and late afternoon air is fresh and crisp but the sun still shines bright and warm. The promise of decay ambles slowly around the corner.

I fucking love fall because bourbon in hot tea is delicious. Because football. Because I have a few pairs of bangin’ boots that are too hot to wear in the warm months. Because I always win at pumpkin carving competitions and I cannot resist the smell of spice. I fucking love fall because it represents a time of year for us to be grateful for all the bounty we have had but also to prepare to survive without abundance.

In classic poetry fall is often depicted as melancholic and sorrowful—the promises of an unclouded summer gone, the preparation for a harsh and unfriendly winter near. But I happen to think of fall as the idyllic time for a reawakening.

As colorful leaves deteriorate and plunge to the ground so do I shed the misgivings that cling to my spirit. As the temperature cools and slowly submerses summer’s foliage so do I clear the undergrowth from my life. As the rain falls my soul cries, cleansed by a flood of new beginnings.

Though the temporary end of copious perspiration is motive enough, there are plenty more reasons why I fucking love fall.

  2. Isn’t fall the best? We only get about three days of it in Texas, but they are my favorite days of the year. I f-ing love fall and your blog, as well!
